Student Work

Here is some feedback from the Plant Transport experiment (the celery in the ink) conducted by Science students Caoimhe Mae and her brother Casey in Dublin.

The celery was left in the ink for one week, and observed. The results were recorded by taking photos (see below). It was observed that the ink did not rise up through the celery stalk as expected. We can see the leaves are still green and the ink dots were not seen when the stalk was cut. The reasons could be that the stalk was quite old and perhaps was not alive, or perhaps as it is Winter now and there is less daylight – the plant was not taking as much water as in Summer.

Either way, they are not deterred and are repeating this experiment with a different type of ink (food colouring) and new celery. Well done on your careful and considered process and your patience.
